A-Level Business revision: turn definitions into marks

In Business, knowing the definition is the easy part. The marks are in using it: applying it to the business in the question, analysing the effect, then judging how far it matters. Highlighting the textbook doesn't practise any of that.

What the mark scheme rewards

Longer answers are marked on four things:

  • Knowledge: the term or concept, used correctly.
  • Application: details from the business in the question, such as its name, products or figures. An answer that could be about any business gains little.
  • Analysis: the "leads to" chain, showing the consequence of a point step by step.
  • Evaluation: weighing the point against a counter-argument or its limits, then reaching a judgement that depends on the situation.

Turn highlighting into recall

Dunlosky et al. (2013) rated highlighting as low utility and practice testing as high utility. Try this instead:

  1. Cover the definition and say it out loud.
  2. Give a real company example from memory.
  3. Say one reason it helps and one reason it might not.
  4. Check your notes and fix only what you got wrong.

If you can't name a real example without looking, you haven't learned that topic yet.

Quick answers

What do examiners reward in A-Level Business answers?

Four things: knowledge, application (details from the business in the question), analysis (the "leads to" chain) and evaluation (weighing the point and reaching a judgement that depends on the situation).

Is highlighting the textbook good Business revision?

Dunlosky et al. (2013) rated highlighting as low utility and practice testing as high utility. Covering the definition, saying it, and giving a real company example from memory practises what the marks are for.
